- The trials of 1895: brought a libel suit against the Marquess of Queensberry (Bosie's father); lost, was then prosecuted in turn, and sentenced to two years' hard labour, served at Pentonville, Wandsworth, and Reading.
- After prison: bankrupt, in exile in France and Italy under the name "Sebastian Melmoth". Received into the Roman Catholic Church on the day of death.
- Frenemy of Whistler. Lectured across America in 1882 ("I have nothing to declare except my genius."). Younger countryman of Shaw; older contemporary of Yeats, who admired him.
